Itinerary

1. SYNTAGMA SQUARE (GREEK PARLIAMENT)

Syntagma Square is the central square of Athens. The square is named after the Constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprising on 3 September 1843. It is located in front of the 19th-century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934.

2. MONUMENT (TOMB) OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a war memorial located in Syntagma Square in Athens, in front of the Old Royal Palace. It is a cenotaph dedicated to the Greek soldiers killed during war. It was sculpted between 1930 and 1932 by sculptor Fokion Rok. The tomb is guarded by the Evzones of the Presidential Guard. The change of the guards takes place every hour by the military unit whose members stand proudly in perfect stillness in front of the Greek Parliament. But every Sunday morning at 11 am, you can watch the official ceremony of changing of the guards with the official dresses.

3. ARCH OF ADRIAN

The Arch of Adrian is a monumental gateway resembling in some respects a Roman triumphal arch. It spanned an ancient road from the center of Athens to the complex of structures on the eastern side of the city that included the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

4. TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is a former colossal temple at the center of Athens that was dedicated to Olympian Zeus. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who envisaged building the greatest temple in the ancient world, but it was not completed until the reign of the Roman Emperor Adrian in the 2nd century AD. During the Roman period, the temple, which included 104 colossal columns, was renowned as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world.

5. Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. It is located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens as its namedescribes in Greek language and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of greatarchitectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon, the Erechtheon,the Propylaea and the small temple Athena Nike.

6. New Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological site-specific museum, housing more than 3.000 famous artefacts from the Athenian Acropolis, the most significant sanctuary of the ancient city. Located in the historical area of Makriyianni, southeast of the Rock of the Acropolis, the Museum narrates the story of life on the Rock from prehistoric times until the end of Antiquity. The Museum provides an increasingly diverse program of activities for its visitors, as well restaurant, café and Museum shopping are available.

7. PANATHENAIC STADIUM

Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble with a capacity of 50,000 seats. The stadium hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875 and after being refurbished, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and was the venue for 4 of the 9 contested sports. It was also used for various purposes in the 20th century and was once again used as an Olympic venue in 2004. It is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.

8. PRESIDENTIAL MANSION

The Presidential Mansion is the official residence of the President of the Hellenic Republic. It served previously as the Royal Palace (often known as the New Royal Palace), until the abolition of the monarchy by the 1973 referendum.

9. ARCHITECTURAL TRILOGY

Three buildings designed by the Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen, as part of his famous Architectural Trilogy of neo-classical buildings including the National Library, the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University.

  • National Library
    The National Library is situated near the center of city of Athens and was founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias. The mission of the National Library of Greece is to locate, collect, organize, describe and preserve the perpetual evidence of Greek culture and its uptake over time, as well as important representative evidence of human intellectual production.
  • Academy of Athens
    The Academy of Athens is Greece’s national academy and the highest research establishment in the country. It was established in 1926, with its founding principle traces back to the historical Academy of Plato, and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The Academy’s main building is one of the major landmarks of Athens.
  • Athens University
    The Athens University has been in continuous operation since its establishment in 1837 and is the oldest higher education institution of the modern Greek state and the first contemporary university in both the Balkan Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean. Today it is one of the largest universities by enrollment in Europe, with over 69,000 registered students.
10. Plaka & monastiraki & flea market

Plaka is the old historical neighborhood of Athens, clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, and incorporating labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture. Plaka is built on top of the residential areas of the ancient town of Athens. It is known as the “neighborhood of the Gods” due to its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. Monastiraki is a flea market neighborhood in the old town of Athens, Greece and one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. The area is home to clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores and is a major tourist attraction in Athens and Attica for bargain shopping. The area is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Church of the Pantanassa that is located within the square.
